These Ham, Cheese and Herb Savory Scrolls are fluffy, packed with flavor and simply delicious. The absolute perfect savory snack.

Growing up in Australia, savory scrolls were a staple treat, and I’ve missed them ever since. Whether they were served at family gatherings or enjoyed as a quick snack, these delicious scrolls were everywhere. Whenever I make them for get-togethers, I usually take a shortcut with puff pastry — it’s foolproof and always a crowd-pleaser. But recently, I’ve been craving that soft, homemade dough like the one from Baker’s Delight, so I decided to recreate it. To my surprise, my first attempt came out almost perfect! Almost…

The Secret to Perfect Savory Scrolls: Versatility

One of the best things about savory scrolls is how versatile they are. You can throw in any leftovers from your fridge, and they’ll always turn out amazing. For this batch, I used leftover ham, cheese, and whatever fresh herbs I had left before they went bad. The result? A flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth snack that was a hit!

What’s great about these savory scrolls is that they’re completely customizable! So, whether you’re using up leftover roast chicken, veggies, or even some bacon bits, the possibilities are endless.

Ingredients:

Dough:

  • 4 cups of bread flour (plus a little bit extra for sprinkling)
  • 3 teaspoons of instant yeast
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons of salt
  • 1 2/3 cups of warm whole milk

Filling:

  • 1 cup of diced ham
  • 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup of chopped Italian parsley
  • 1/2 cup of chopped dill
  • Sprinkle of salt and pepper

Savory scrolls – Simple ingredients for both the dough and filling

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, salt, and yeast with the flour.

  3. Slowly add warm milk while mixing until the dough starts to come together.

  4. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it’s soft and smooth.

  5. Cover the dough with a tea towel and let it sit in a warm spot for 1.5 hours to rise. The dough should double in size.

  6. Punch the air out of the dough, then roll it into a rectangular shape, about ½ inch thick.

  7. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining ingredients (e.g., ham, cheese, herbs) and spread evenly over the dough.

  8. Roll up the dough tightly to form a log, then slice into 2-inch pieces.

  9. Place the scrolls on a baking tray, cover, and let them proof for 30 minutes. They should expand by 20-30%.

  10. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown and delicious.

  11. Serve warm for the best, melt-in-your-mouth experience!
